Say From SA – February 17

3 minute read

We are beginning the preparation for the Adelaide Cup in a month’s time and the Birthday Cup is that race on this Morphettville card.

The Chairman
The Chairman Picture: Racing and Sports

In that very race, this has to be the chance for The Chairman to get on the board this campaign.

He’s been getting closer in Open Handicaps in Melbourne and Mick Price could well have targeted him as an Adelaide Cup hope. He is bred to run it out.

Also being a multiple Group placegetter he has already shown potential at this level.

Now nearing peak fitness, hope they ride him forward in the small field and take all the bad possibilities out of play.

Mick Price had another nice horse in the race but has scratched her.

Later in the day, there is another Victorian heading over who is a lovely, improving three year old for the future.

Won Ball graduated from a maiden at Geelong to score impressively at Sandown at the midweeks.

He didn’t win by a big margin but controlled the race near the speed and looked like he will only get better.

After the claim, he will be carrying less weight than he did at home and on a high limit looks a winning chance again.

Happy to be backing a horse who doesn’t know how to lose just yet.

Exalted Lightning has his maiden stakes win and nine in total with this easy win here. He dropped out to be last early and in a compact field remained there, one off the fence, down the back straight to the 600m. Jockey Todd Pannell moved out three wide at the 500m but they were still second last into the straight and even wider starting the run home. He took time to balance but slowly gathered momentum, grabbed the lead at the 100m then pulled his way clear to win quite easily by two lengths. Jim’s Journey was back in traffic before straightening then finished well between runners for second from Addison who was also back turning in and looked a possibility but was out-finished late to hold third. Favourite The Chairman took over into the straight but was passed late for a close up fourth.
