Best From The West – June 16

3 minute read

It is Hyperion Stakes day at Belmont and giving a G1 winner another shot to win this week.

Following an excellent effort coming from last in the Belmont Sprint, Pounamu can only be fitter and more suited in this G3 contest.

Second up last prep he was unlucky into sixth in the Railway and then won the G1 Kingston Town Classic and WFA Ted Van Heemst Stakes afterwards before just missing in the Perth Cup.

While he may even be better again next start, happy to think he is capable of running down a similar field to last time with the benefit of the added furlong.

The barrier is a help as well as he won’t be giving away too much ground at all.

Onto Race 8 where Final Salute is one to consider closely first up.

He got to a WA Derby just over 12 months ago and then ran some decent races in the Spring including a win on resumption.

Importantly he has an excellent record going first up and a track that won’t be too firm is perfect for him.

Thinking it is a race of chances but the William Pike get out punters may line up.

Material Man followed his win in the Belmont Sprint (Gr 3, 1400m) here a fortnight ago, when resuming after taking out the Perth Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) on New Year's Day, with another Group success here. He was settled nicely in third place on the rails by Lucy Warwick, got into clear running on straightening and he then finished well in the sprint home to score by a long neck at the post. Great Shot was smartly away and went for the front. He then set a reasonable tempo (first 1000m 62.01) before lifting the pace from the 600m. He then fought gamely, only being overtaken in the closing stages for second. Pounamu raced in fifth place, on the rails, got along the inner from the home turn and then fought on nicely in the sprint home for third in a sound effort at his second run this preparation.
